Dear Colleagues,

Advent - a time of preparation and hope

As we are all aware, throughout this year much of the Eastern region of Australia has been ravaged by a series of extraordinary flood events following record rainfall in many parts of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Earlier this year, Marists across the country rallied around their friends and colleagues in Brisbane and the NSW northern rivers in tangible ways that reflected the spirit and solidarity we share. Just this week the small town of Forbes in the Central West of NSW has been a constant on the national news as the worst floods in 70 years and possibly on record have engulfed the Lachlan Valley over the past three weeks.

As we approach the Season of Advent, familiar to us as a time of preparation for the joyous and hope filled celebration of Christ's birth, the staff and students of Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes are facing the immense challenges of the current floods with a sense of optimism, resilience, courage, ingenuity, and good humour reflecting an inspiring deep faith in God and one another.

Despite the College having to close twice in just a few weeks due to flood waters surrounding the campus and blocking roads throughout the surrounding districts, classes have continued online and in "learning hubs" established in Forbes as well as surrounding towns and villages in public libraries and halls in whatever ways possible with staff and students from those local areas.

Under the calm and constant leadership of Principal Stephen Dwyer, the College community has flourished with hope at a time when despair could take hold. As we prepare for Christmas and reflect on the meaning of Jesus in our lives, may the good people of Red Bend Catholic College be present in your thoughts and prayers.

A Prayer for Advent - Henri J M Nouwen

Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"

Amen.
