Death of Brother Charles Howard
The Marist world lost one of its most outstanding leaders with the death of former Superior General, Brother Charles Howard AM on Saturday 14 January. Brother Charles died peacefully after a short illness. At the time he had been living in retirement in the senior Brothers’ community at St Gregory’s College, Campelltown.
The only Australian ever to be elected Superior General, Brother Charles had a transformational impact on Marist life and mission, one that continues to bear fruit almost two decades after his Generalate, and will do so for a long time to come.
The Reqiuem Mass for Brother Charles will be celebrated at St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill on Tuesday 24 January. The chief celebrant will be the President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, the Most Reverend Philip Wilson. Archbishop Wilson is also an ex-student of Brother Charles. The eulogist will be former Superior General, Brother Seán Sammon, from New York. The current Superior General, Brother Emili Turú, will also travel from Rome to take part.
